Conil de la Frontera Area

Conil de la Frontera is one of Spain’s ”white” towns and sits on the Atlantic coast in the province of Cadiz. Once a sleepy fishing village, the town has grown into a popular tourist destination favoured by Spanish and German holidaymakers. The area enjoys a mild climate with plenty of sunshine all year round, and to compliment the weather there are around 15 kilometres of stunning coastline with long white sand beaches, hidden coves and rocky cliffs. Evidence shows that Conil de la Frontera has been inhabited since Phoenician times and places of interest include the Museo de Raíces Conileñas and the Espiritu Santo Shrine. The town’s Plaza del Castillo is home to the Santa Catalina Parish Church and the town hall. Around the plaza are a selection of shops, cafe’s, bars and restaurants.

Nature lovers and keen walkers will enjoy hiking through El Colarado pine forests that are home to a variety of endangered species of flora & fauna. Due in part to the Spanish Civil War and a lack of funding, Spain’s plans to construct an intricate rail system ground to a halt and the 6,000 kilometres of railway line that had been laid were abandoned and left to the encroaching countryside. In the early 1990’s the government decided to make use of the derelict tracks and introduced plans for the ”Vias Verde” (greenways) The results produced a scenic network of over 2000 kilometres of walking/cycling routes and bridleways throughout the Spanish countryside. Millions of visitors per year now enjoy these greenways. The Via Verde de la Sierra meanders through the province of Cadiz and visitors to Conil de la Frontera can enjoy the picturesque mountains and countyside along its route.

The beaches of the area are superb and holidaymakers can choose from a selection of popular and secluded bays and coves as well as 2 official nudist beaches in Conil de la Frontera. Playa Los Bateles is the largest and most popular beach and boasts good facilities, a choice of water sports as well as a number of bars and restaurants.
