Nudist Beach in Andratx
Andratx
Situated in the south west of Majorca and about 5 kilometres inland is the town of Andratx. The ancient town was built inland as a precaution against marauding pirates and sits in a shallow valley amidst rolling hillside. As a further early warning system, 14 observation towers were built in the surrounding areas, 12 of which still exist. The town itself houses mainly local residents and its cobbled streets are dotted with quaint cafes and bars. In the upper part of the town is the Church of Santa Maria, and the views towards the port area are well worth the uphill trek.
Port d’Andratx and its small village is where most of the tourist industry is located. The pretty harbour area and hills around it are popular with the rich and famous jet set, and many film stars and musicians have homes here. The village and harbour offer visitors a good selection of bars and restaurants and the opportunity to enjoy fresh local fish and seafood whilst admiring the luxury yachts and beautiful sunsets. The Sierra de Tramuntana mountain range forms part of the municipality of Andratx and has been listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Its highest point is Puig Major which is also the highest mountain in the Balearic Islands, standing at just under 1,500 metres. The mountain range receives substantial more rainfall than other parts of the island and the highest peaks even get some snow during the winter months.
The area around the port is popular with cyclists and walkers who take advantage of the many paths and hiking trails which offer some fantastic views. Fishing and water sports can be found around the port and coastal areas and within an hours drive are a selection of golf courses. Although most are small, there are a good choice of beaches and coves in the area, a couple of which have wheelchair access. Heading from the port towards the village of Peguera there is an official nudist beach in Andratx.
