The Majorcan town of Banyalbufar is situated in a mountainous region to the north west of the island. Dominated by the soaring peaks of the Sierra Tramuntana, the town borders the coast and was an important agricultural region for many centuries. At one stage the region was dedicated almost exclusively to the production of Malvasier wine and evidence of this can be seen in the 2000 odd steppes farmed into the surrounding slopes. Apart from tourism, the town and region still produces tomatoes and other fruit, and the local sheep and goats roam the hillsides grazing on succulent plants and aromatic herbs which gives the meat a wonderful flavour. Visitors can explore the ancient La Baronia manor house and its watchtower dating back to the 17th century. Not far from the town is the island’s most visited place of interest, known as the Torre de ses Animes, it is an old watchtower built as an early warning system against raiding pirates which boasts panoramic views over the Mediterranean.
Banyalbufar enjoys a selection of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants where visitors can sample the famous sun dried tomatoes of the region as well as excellent fried fish and seafood. Keen anglers can try their hand at sea fishing from one of the many rocky coves in the area, and the best way to enjoy the catch is to BBQ it straight from the ocean ( please leave only your footprints ) Being a mountainous region, Banyalbufar is a firm favourite with hikers who can roam its excellent coastal paths and hiking trails offering stunning scenery and views. Bicycle hire is available for those who prefer to explore the many cycle paths of the area.
Throughout July and August, visitors can attend several free music concerts and the town holds an annual Jazz Festival at the Baronia Clouster. The main beach, although relatively small and pebbly, gets busy during the summer months and visitors may wish to venture further afield where there is a better selection of beaches and secluded coves, as well as an official nudist beach in Banyalbufar.
