Situated just 12 kilometres west of Malaga, the town of Benalmádena is one of the Costa del Sol’s main tourist destinations. Inhabited since prehistoric times, the town’s industry and economy saw a steady growth during its Moorish occupancy and through the years has benefited from various industries including wine and paper production. The town has also experienced some turbulent times, evident in the 15th century watch towers that were built as an early warning system against pirate raids.
Nestled at the foot of Mount Calamorro is the original village, set slightly inland from the coast and now referred to as Benalmádena Pueblo, the area offers fantastic sea views, traditional whitewashed buildings and pretty plazas where visitors can enjoy a meal in one of its excellent restaurants. Nearby Mijas Pueblo is famous for being home to the largest monument in the world that commemorates Christopher Columbus’ epic journey to discover the New World. Built in the late 20th century and known as Colomares Castle, it houses a collection of monuments from around the world. Further towards the coast is the town’s train station and many shops, bars and restaurants in the area known as Arroyo de la Miel where visitors can enjoy a vertigo enhancing cable ride to the top of the mountain to experience the sweeping views over the coast to North Africa.
Benalmádena offers visitors various attractions and monuments including the largest Buddhist monument in Europe that stands 33 metres tall. Known as the Enlightenment Stupa it represents peace, prosperity and harmony with nature and is a place for meditation and worship. There are also 2 aquariums, the beautiful La Paloma Park with themed gardens, a lake, waterfalls and a great variety of flora & fauna. Near the park there are 2 marinas an adventure park and a promenade where visitors can enjoy the town’s beaches as well as 2 official nudist beach in Benalmádena. Kids will have a great time at the Tivoli World Theme Park with a variety of rides, green areas, bars, restaurants, and on Sundays, a lively market.
