Málaga City Area

The extremely popular port city of Málaga is the capital of the Province of Málaga and one of the oldest cities in the world. Rich in history, it was founded by the Phoenicians in around 770 BC and archaeological sites and monuments from various eras make the city’s historic centre a ”virtual museum” where visitors can spend days exploring its buildings, museums and other places of interest. The city has born some famous sons including the acclaimed sculptor and painter Pablo Picasso and movie star Antonio Banderas. From its hilltop position in the city, the Moorish Alcazaba is a fortress connected to the Castle of Gibralfaro and a labyrinth of walls, gates and corridors with interesting architecture and monuments at every twist and turn. Also of interest are the Cathedral of the Incarnation, La Concepcion botanical gardens, Museo Picasso Málaga and La Malagueta Bullring, just to name a few.

Málaga enjoys a varied economy although tourism is by far the main contributor, evident in the abundance of high rise hotels and holiday apartments. The city is known for having the warmest winters of any city in Europe and this has led to an extremely large population of expatriates from all over Europe and the United Kingdom. Visitors are never at a loss for things to do in Málaga with the quaint streets and alleyways of the Old Town, chic and eccentric area of Soho and the ultra modern and prosperous Muelle Uno Port with an excellent selection of glamorous boutiques, sophisticated cocktail lounges and world class restaurants.

The city boasts an impressive 15 beaches with many amenities, promenades, shops bars and restaurants. There are 2 official nudist beaches in Málaga and many secluded bays and coves. Water sports of all kinds can be enjoyed from most of the beaches and there are a good choice of water and land based tours of the area.
