Lugo Province
The province of Lugo encompasses the Cantabrian Mariña in the north and a large inland territory of mountains, rivers and the Roman city of Lugo. With so much of the province lying away from the sea, it is a quieter destination than the Rías Baixas, and this site lists a single coastal municipality, Foz. Official Galician tourism presents A Mariña as a green shore of fishing towns, dunes and rock-cut coves between the ría of Ribadeo and the ría of Foz.
Lugo province offers visitors an excellent choice of attractions, historical quarters and a short family coast. Lugo city is the provincial capital. UNESCO inscribed its Roman walls in 2000, a complete circuit that still walks the historic centre, and the cathedral sits inside that ring. The Mariña is a different world: dairy country meeting the Cantabrian Sea, with Foz at the mouth of its ría and the urban sand of A Rapadoira a short stroll from the harbour. Inland, the province climbs toward Os Ancares and the upper Miño. Visitors come for seafood, coastal walks and a slower pace than the southern rías.
Farming, fishing and everyday commuting form a large part of the province's everyday economy. Each summer holidaymakers flock to A Mariña in search of fun in the sea, lazy days of sunbathing and evenings spent wining and dining on the local seafood.
