A Coruña Province
The province of A Coruña encompasses both the city shore and the neighbouring costas, from Ferrolterra and the rías of Ares and Betanzos in the north to the Barbanza and the ría of Muros-Noia in the south, and as far inland as Santiago de Compostela. With so much of the coastal strip being a working Atlantic façade, it is an extremely popular destination and includes the great city of A Coruña as well as naval Ferrol, the pilgrimage capital at Santiago, and quieter ría towns such as Pontedeume and Porto do Son. Official Galician tourism describes a coast of rías, fishing ports and long sands, with the Costa da Morte opening west of Arteixo.
A Coruña province offers visitors an excellent choice of attractions, historical quarters, sandy family beaches, granite headlands and the wide Gulf of Ártabro. The city of A Coruña is a major port and the site of the Tower of Hercules, inscribed by UNESCO in 2009; Alvedro airport sits just inland. Visitors come for the glass galleries on the harbour, the María Pita square and the evening paseo along Riazor and Orzán. Immediately across the ría, Oleiros is a residential shore of coves toward Mera, while Sada and Miño sit on the ría of Betanzos. Ares faces Ferrolterra; Ferrol remains a naval city with an outer-coast pair of quieter sands. North toward the Costa da Morte of the Rías Altas, Valdoviño is known for the Frouxeira lagoon and the surf at Pantín. On the Barbanza, Ribeira is a working fishing port beside the Corrubedo dunes, and Porto do Son keeps the Castro de Baroña on its peninsula.
Fishing, shipyards and commuting form a large part of the province's everyday economy, although the main draw for visitors is undoubtedly the coast, which is no wonder considering the vast choice of beautiful beaches. Each summer thousands of holidaymakers flock to the area in search of fun in the sea, lazy days of sunbathing and evenings spent wining and dining on the local seafood and Ribeiro or Albariño wines. Apart from the province's main beaches, there are also 11 areas that have 20 nudist beaches in A Coruña.
