Pontevedra Province
The province of Pontevedra encompasses the Rías Baixas, from the ría of Arousa in the north to the ría of Vigo in the south, and as far inland as the provincial capital and the O Salnés vineyards. With so much of the coastal strip being a classic summer shore, it is an extremely popular destination and includes the great port city of Vigo as well as resort towns such as Sanxenxo and the peninsula of O Grove. Official Galician tourism describes pine-backed sands, island day trips and the Costa da Vela at the western tip of the Morrazo.
Pontevedra province offers visitors an excellent choice of attractions, historical quarters, sandy family beaches, granite headlands and the Atlantic Islands National Park. Pontevedra city is the provincial capital, a compact stone centre of squares and arcades; Vigo, a little further south, is Galicia's largest city, a major port and the site of Peinador airport. Visitors come for seafood, Albariño and boat trips to the Cíes from Vigo and to Ons from Bueu. The Morrazo peninsula holds Cangas and Bueu. Marín sits on the ría of Pontevedra opposite the provincial capital. Sanxenxo is the busy resort of O Salnés; O Grove is the shellfish peninsula at the mouth of Arousa. Park beaches on Cíes and Ons need a booked visit, and the national park itself describes a nudist tradition on Figueiras and Melide.
Fishing, shipyards, wine and summer tourism form a large part of the province's everyday economy, which is no wonder considering the vast choice of beautiful beaches. Each summer thousands of holidaymakers flock to the area in search of fun in the sea, lazy days of sunbathing and evenings spent wining and dining on the local seafood and Albariño.
