Bizkaia Province
The province of Bizkaia encompasses Bilbao, the Abra estuary and the Uribe coast west toward Plentzia, with green hills inland and a short, cliffy Atlantic face. Official Basque Government tourism presents this shore as part of the Basque Coast: surfing, harbour towns and geological walks rather than a single resort strip. Bilbao is the provincial capital and the usual air gate at Loiu. Visitors come for the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the Casco Viejo and a rebuilt riverside, then drop down to the sea at Getxo, Sopela and Barrika.
Bizkaia province offers visitors an excellent choice of attractions, industrial heritage, sandy family beaches and rugged Uribe cliffs. UNESCO inscribed the Vizcaya Bridge in 2006. Designed by Alberto de Palacio and finished in 1893, the transporter still carries people and vehicles in a hanging gondola between Getxo and Portugalete, 45 metres above the Ibaizabal mouth. Getxo itself is a large estuary town of hanging houses, Puerto Viejo and Metro Bilbao. Official Getxo tourism highlights Gorrondatxe, also called Azkorri, as a cliff and dune beach of geological interest, and official Euskadi copy places Barinatxe, La Salvaje, between Getxo and Sopela with a nudist area. Sopela is the next Uribe municipality, a surfing town whose main service sand is not on this site. Barrika sits on the same cliff road, a smaller village above pebble and cove beaches. Official Euskadi calls Meñakoz, shared with Sopela, a 400-metre nudist beach of pebbles and a famous big-wave spot, and describes Muriola, also called La Cantera, as a small nudist cove ten minutes from the village.
Fishing, commuting and the port still form a large part of the province's everyday economy, although the coast is a firm favourite with visitors from Bilbao and further afield, which is no wonder considering the choice of beautiful beaches within a short Metro or road hop. Each summer holidaymakers flock to the area in search of fun in the sea, lazy days of sunbathing and evenings spent wining and dining on pintxos and the local catch.
