Arnuero Area

Situated in northern Spain, Arnuero is a municipality in the autonomous community of Cantabria. It is made up of three villages, Isla which is the most popular with tourists and has two seaside areas. The other two are Soano and Arnuero itself. For travellers from the United Kingdom, Arnuero is conveniently located close to Santander where there is a major ferry crossing. During the summer months the villages get quite busy and the two main beaches Playa la Arena and Quejo are very popular. There are a selection of shops, bars and restaurants, parks and plazas as well as a small harbour area. To truly discover the beaches and coves of the area just walk or cycle the many trails that wind their way through forests, hills, valleys, cliffs and coves where there are many small bays and beaches, including an official nudist beach in Arnuero. Although summer is busier, the area receives visitors throughout the year, many there to visit the spectacular Cantabrian Mountains.

The beautiful and rugged Cantabrian mountains are one of the largest mountain ranges in Spain and stretch east to west for over 300 kilometres. In the resorts of Alto Campo and Manzaneda the skiing can be good, and throughout the mountains there are many fantastic rock climbing and hiking routes. Some of the country’s major rivers rise in the mountain range, providing for excellent lake and river fishing. Whilst hiking or enjoying the tranquility of a mountain lake you may be lucky enough to spot a Cantabrian brown bear or the elusive Iberian wolf. The spectacular Picos de Europa mountain range and national park form part of the Cantabrian range and in 2002 the area was awarded the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Designation. It covers an area of more than 600km2 that includes the wonderful Covadonga Lakes.
