Liendo is a municipality situated in the autonomous community of Cantabria. It sits in a picturesque valley surrounded by fertile countryside. Although not large, its nearby beaches and numerous cliffs offer beautiful views and tranquil coves to explore. There are a selection of shops, bars and restaurants offering delicious local cuisine, and throughout the town are parks and plazas with seating and shady areas to escape the afternoon heat. Places of interest include the town hall, the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption of Liendo, La Ermita de San Andrés that is accessed by a Roman bridge, and La Ermita de San Julian that offers beautiful views but is sadly now in ruins. There are also stately homes and civic buildings to visit as well as some interesting archaeological caves.
Liendo’s location is perfect for those travelling by ferry as it is just over 50 kilometres from the major ferry port at Santander. There are 3 return ferry crossings per week from Portsmouth, United Kingdom that take between 24-32 hours depending on the weather. There is also 1 return ferry crossing per week from Plymouth that takes approximately 20 hours. Both routes offer the option of passenger only or passenger and car. 50 kilometres in the opposite direction from Liendo there is another major ferry port at Bilbao. There are 2 return ferry crossings per week from Portsmouth that also take between 24-32 hours and offer the option of passenger only or passenger and car.
Playa San Julian which is Liendo’s main beach is the only one in the area that can be reached from the valley, and just before you get to the beach there is a foot path that takes you to La Ermita de San Julian which is well worth the detour for the spectacular views over the valley. A bit further afield there is an official nudist beach in Liendo and in the nearby town of Laredo there is a fantastic long stretch of beach set in a sweeping bay of 7 kilometres.
