The city of Alicante is one of the largest on the Costa Blanca and the capital of the Alicante Province. Steeped in history, the Alicante region has been inhabited for over 7000 years. Combining a rich cultural heritage with the feel a well planned modern city, it lies at the foot of the Castle of Santa Barbera and looks over the Port of Alicante to the glistening Mediterranean sea. The port plays an important role, being one of the busiest ports in Spain for the cruise industry. One of the most beautiful features of the city is its seafront promenade, lined with palm trees and constructed from over six million colourful tiles depicting ocean waves. There are several lovely sandy beaches to choose and a marina with moorings for up to 800 vessels. The marina also houses the Costa Blanca Nautical Club where sailing enthusiasts can take lessons or hire a sailing boat.
Just outside the city is the international Alicante airport, one of the busiest in Spain that services a number of budget airlines from all over Europe and the United Kingdom. Within an hour’s, drive visitors can choose from a number of top class golf courses, and the popular city of Benidorm is just over a 30 minute drive. Within easy reach of Alicante are the Caves of Canelobre and the village of Agost where there is a thriving pottery industry.
Alicante is a superb place to visit for sports lovers, offering a wide range of sporting facilities including basketball, volleyball, padel and tennis courts, football pitches, gymnasiums, swimming pools and a riding school. There are facilities for all sorts of water sports and excellent places for scuba diving, including the beautifully clear waters around Tabarca Island. For a reprise from the afternoon sun visitors can wonder around one of the city’s lovely green parks or take a stroll along the fantastic promenade.
