Gijón Area

Located on the Bay of Biscay, Gijón is the largest city in the autonomous community of Asturias. Being on the Atlantic ocean, the city has relatively cool summers and mild yet wet winters. Gijón is home to one of Spain’s largest shipping ports where most of the city’s businesses are located, and its economy comes from various sectors including the rearing of livestock, steel production, fish farms and tourism. The city also has a smaller port where sailing and small private boats are docked and the area has several beaches including the popular San Lorenzo beach.

The city’s strong economy gives it a lively feel and makes it attractive to tourists who can enjoy an excellent selection of shops, boutiques, cafes, bars and restaurants. There are good motorway and rail links and the city also has a relatively new underground rail network. For travellers from the United Kingdom and Europe there is an international airport in nearby Castrillon and an important ferry link to the UK in Santander. Places of interest include the historical Campo Valdés Roman baths and the stunning Revillagigedo Palace with its baroque style architecture is a National Historic Landmark.

Many visitors to Gijón use the city as a base to visit the impressive Picos de Europa National Park which forms part of the huge Cantabrian Mountains. The area has some of the deepest caves in the world and its highest peak, Torre de Cerrado, along with most of the mountain range provide excellent opportunities for climbers and mountaineers. The city’s main beach, San Lorenzo offers services such as showers, toilets and lifeguards and also has a selection of watersports. There is an official nudist beach in Gijón as well as many smaller rural beaches, and family friendly ones such as Poniente beach that has fine sand and calm waters during the summer months.
