Llanes Area

Situated on Spain’s beautiful Costa Verde (green coast) is the municipality of Llanes. It is an active fishing port and popular summer tourist destination. The area around Llanes is dominated by the Sierra del Cura mountain range that offers excellent hiking through its many lush valleys and slopes. There are also many caves to visit including the Cueva Bolado where ancient art can still be seen. Places of interest in the town include Tower Alfonso 1x that was built in the 13th century and later served as a prison, the old town wall dating back to 1206 and the lovely Paseo de San Pedro which is a cliff top walk located near Sablon beach. Visitors may also enjoy exploring the Dukes of Estrada and Gaztanaga palaces or the Municipal Arts Centre, located in the old house of Posada Herrera. Llanes old town has been declared an historic and artistic site that boasts some fine examples of classical architecture.

In the Port of Llanes, the Basque artist Aguistin Ibarrola has cleverly painted the huge stone blocks that are used as sea defences, giving it a more cheery look. The town offers visitors a good selection of shops, tapas bars and restaurants that serve excellent local fish and seafood. During the summer season there is also a good choice of nightlife and the town’s local inhabitants hold various festivals throughout the year. What most people come to Llanes for are the excellent choice of outdoor activities and beautiful sandy beaches. The area boasts over 50 kilometres of coastline including 2 main beaches located in the town, called Puerto Chico and El Sablon, and a number of smaller ones within walking distance as well as 4 official nudist beaches in Llanes. Other outdoor pursuits include hiking, cycling, mountaineering, golfing, surfing, fishing, trekking, adventure sports and water sports.
