Gozón Area

The small municipality of Gozón is a fishing port that lies on the north coast of Spain. Its capital, Luanco is a charming little village that offers visitors wonderfully fresh seafood and delicious local cider. There is not much to see in the village but a walk around the harbour area with its pretty colourful houses is great to work up an appetite before lunch. Nearby Lastres is recognised as one of Spain’s prettiest villages. It perches on top of a hillside with fantastic views of the bay and a backdrop of lush green hills. The village is well known as the setting for the Spanish TV version of the popular British TV series Doc Martin, played by Martin Clunes, and visitors to the village can rub shoulders with some of the actors and stage crew in the bars and hotels. A walk along the steep cobbled lanes to the top of the village is a must and visitors can even see Dr Mateo’s house in the TV series that actually used to belong to the village’s real doctor. The views from here are reminiscent of Cornwall and there are a few traditional bars along the way offering local cider and tasty grilled sardines and seafood.

Many hikers and cyclists visit Gozón as its spectacular scenery and mild summers are perfect for active outdoor pursuits. Some choose to stay at the El Molino Camping Grounds in Banugues that is close to the beach and has basic facilities including waste water and chemical toilet disposal facilities, electricity, clothes washers/dryers, toilets and showers. The hotel next door serves good breakfasts and La Ponderosa bar offers free Wi-Fi as long as you are having a drink or meal. There are some lovely beaches to visit in the area including the picturesque Carniciega beach, the large Verdico beach and busy Banugues beach. There is also an official nudist beach in Gozón although many visitors go topless in the more remote coves and bays too.
