Arenys de Mar is a historic fishing and market town on the Maresme, about 40 kilometres north-east of Barcelona on the Rodalies R1 line. The town grew as a shipbuilding and trading port under the shelter of the hills, and it still reads as a working seafaring place rather than a purpose-built resort: a harbour, a long urban beach and an old town that turns around the riera, the dry riverbed that serves as the main street. Visitors come for the marina, the fish-market tradition, lace and cabinet-making workshops, and the cemetery that the poet Salvador Espriu wrote about as Sinera. The C-32 motorway and the N-II run parallel to the shore, but the train is the simple approach from the city.
In summer the urban sand fills with local families and the harbour end is the busiest. For a quieter stretch, walk north toward Canet. There are 2 nudist beaches in Arenys de Mar, La Musclera and La Picordia, public Mediterranean sands where visitors can spend lazy days in the sun or go for an all over tan. They sit away from the main harbour beach and are shared by local naturists and those who arrive from Barcelona by rail.
