Calella, often called Calella de la Costa to distinguish it from Calella de Palafrugell, is a Maresme seaside town on the Rodalies R1, north of Sant Pol de Mar and south of Pineda de Mar. Official Costa Barcelona copy treats it as one of the long, sandy, well-served family beaches of the Barcelona shore, with a promenade, a tourist office and a summer population that far exceeds the winter town. The old parish and market sit a few streets back from the sea. The lighthouse on the Capaspre rocks and the seafront gardens are the usual postcard. Calella has been a popular holiday stop since the mid-twentieth century, welcoming visitors from across Europe, but it remains a Catalan municipal town with a working centre, not only a hotel strip. The C-32 and the N-II run inland of the station.

Each summer thousands of holidaymakers flock to the main sand in search of fun in the sea and lazy days of sunbathing. There is 1 nudist beach in Calella on this site, Les Roques, a rockier corner toward Sant Pol rather than the busy promenade. Visitors who want a quieter cove can walk the stones along the camí, a favourite with those who prefer a little more privacy than the open Maresme sands.
