Barcelona Province
The province of Barcelona encompasses both the city shore and the neighbouring costas, from the Maresme in the north to the Garraf in the south and as far inland as the Montseny and the Penedès vineyards. With so much of the coastal strip being well served by suburban trains, it is an extremely popular destination and includes the great city of Barcelona as well as resort towns such as Calella and Sitges. Official Costa Barcelona tourism describes about 100 kilometres of mainly sandy, urban beaches, with a few rockier corners on the Garraf cliffs.
Barcelona province offers visitors an excellent choice of attractions, historical quarters, sandy family beaches, rugged Garraf hills and the wide Llobregat delta. The city of Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia, a major port and the site of the community's busiest international airport at El Prat de Llobregat. Visitors come for the Gothic Quarter, the Eixample, Gaudí's Sagrada Família and Park Güell, and the rebuilt Olympic waterfront of 1992. North of the city the Maresme is a narrow coastal plain under the Serralada Litoral. The Rodalies R1 line runs the shore through El Masnou, Premià de Mar, Vilassar de Mar, Arenys de Mar, Sant Pol de Mar and Calella. Arenys remains a working fishing port, Vilassar is known for flower-growing, and Sant Pol is one of the prettier, more compact stops on the line. Immediately north of the capital, Badalona is a large everyday city with a long urban seafront. South of the Llobregat, El Prat is both the airport town and a delta of dunes and lagoons, while Sitges, long favoured for Modernista heritage, carnival and an open beach culture, is an easy rail day trip from the city.
Fishing, flowers, wine and commuting form a large part of the province's everyday economy, although the main draw for visitors is undoubtedly the coast, which is no wonder considering the vast choice of beautiful beaches. Each summer thousands of holidaymakers flock to the area in search of fun in the sea, lazy days of sunbathing and evenings spent wining and dining on the local seafood and Penedès wines. Apart from the province's main beaches, there are also 10 areas that have 16 nudist beaches in Barcelona.
