Tarragona Province
The province of Tarragona occupies southern Catalonia, from the Garraf-Penedès edge down to the Ebro and the Valencian border. Official tourism splits the coast into the Costa Daurada, the golden sand of Tarragonès and Baix Camp, and Terres de l'Ebre, the river, delta and southern comarques. Reus Airport, about 13 kilometres from Tarragona city and roughly 110 kilometres from Barcelona, is the usual air gate for this shore, while Barcelona-El Prat remains an easy train or coach connection. The AP-7 and the coastal railway serve the resorts.
Tarragona province offers visitors an excellent choice of attractions, Roman monuments, family sands, wine country and one of the western Mediterranean's great wetlands. Tarragona city is the provincial capital and one of the oldest Roman centres in Spain. UNESCO inscribed the Archaeological Ensemble of Tarraco in 2000: walls, forum, circus, amphitheatre above the sea and the Ferreres aqueduct. The medieval cathedral still stands on the same high town, and the working port shares the waterfront with a string of beaches under the eastern cliffs. Inland lie Cistercian monasteries and the Priorat and Montsant wine hills. On the Costa Daurada, Torredembarra combines a castle town with the Muntanyans dune system, while Vandellòs i l'Hospitalet de l'Infant keeps a pine-backed bay at El Torn beside the family promenade of L'Hospitalet. Further south, L'Ametlla de Mar is still a fishing town of rocky coves. Then the Ebro reaches the sea in a great triangle of rice, lagoons and sand spits: Deltebre on the north hemicycle and Sant Jaume d'Enveja on the south, inside the Terres de l'Ebre biosphere reserve, a landscape for bicycles, bird hides and long empty sand.
Fishing, rice and wine form a large part of the province's everyday economy, although the main industry on the Costa Daurada is undoubtedly tourism. Each summer thousands of holidaymakers flock to the area in search of fun in the sea, lazy days of sunbathing and evenings spent wining and dining on local seafood and Priorat wines. Apart from the province's main beaches, there are also 6 areas that have 10 nudist beaches in Tarragona.
