Girona Province
The province of Girona is the north-eastern corner of Catalonia, from the French border and the eastern Pyrenees down to the Tordera. Its Mediterranean face is the Costa Brava, a name coined in 1908 by the journalist Ferran Agulló looking out from the chapel of Sant Elm at Sant Feliu de Guíxols. Official guides put this jagged shore at about 206 kilometres, from Blanes to Portbou, a landscape of pine, rock, wetlands and long sand. Girona city, the provincial capital, sits inland on the Onyar, a walled hill town of cathedral steps and coloured river houses, with Girona-Costa Brava Airport close by. Figueres, inland in the Alt Empordà, is the town of the Dalí Theatre-Museum.
Girona province offers visitors an excellent choice of attractions, medieval villages, natural parks and some of the most photographed coves in the Mediterranean. The Alt Empordà is the gateway from France. The last Pyrenean foothills meet the sea at Cap de Creus, where Cadaqués, El Port de la Selva and Colera keep the wilder, whitewashed harbour character, and Roses opens onto a great sandy bay. Behind the bay, the Empordà Marshes Natural Park surrounds Castelló d'Empúries, the medieval capital of the old county, and the long dune beach of Sant Pere Pescador. Further south, in the Baix Empordà, Begur stands under its castle with eight named coves, Palamós remains the Costa Brava's leading fishing port, and Calonge, Castell-Platja d'Aro, Santa Cristina d'Aro and Mont-ras share the Vall d'Aro and the camí de ronda. In Selva, Lloret de Mar is the largest resort and Tossa de Mar keeps the only fully walled medieval town still standing on the Catalan shore, the Vila Vella. Artists from Dalí to Chagall used this light as a workplace, and the local cuisine of oily fish, rice and Empordà wine is a firm favourite.
Fishing and agriculture still matter inland, although the main industry on the coast is undoubtedly tourism, which is no wonder considering the vast choice of beautiful beaches and secluded coves. Each summer thousands of holidaymakers flock to the area in search of fun in the sea, lazy days of sunbathing and evenings spent wining and dining. Apart from the province's main beaches, there are also 15 areas that have 24 nudist beaches in Girona.
