Begur stands on a hill in the Baix Empordà, in the heart of the Costa Brava, under the remains of its castle. Official Visit Begur copy places the town on the Begur Massif, with an extensive coastline of cliffs, pines and hidden coves. The same municipal tourism page lists eight beaches and coves: Sa Tuna, Sa Riera, Platja Fonda, Platja del Racó, Illa Roja, Aiguafreda, Fornells and Aiguablava. The historic centre is a walk of Indiano houses, watchtowers and stone streets, and the Fira d'Indians celebrates the families who returned from the Americas. There is no railway in the town; visitors arrive by the C-66 and GI-653 from Palafrugell or La Bisbal, or by bus from Girona and the coastal resorts. In summer the castle viewpoint and the cove car parks fill early.

Official Costa Brava guides describe the waters here as among the clearest on this coast, with mountains dropping into the sea. The camí de ronda links several of the beaches on foot. There is 1 nudist beach in Begur, L'Illa Roja, the reddish-islet cove between Sa Riera and the Racó. It is a public cala for lazy days in the sun, a favourite with those who prefer a little more privacy than the busier named bays. Bring water, expect a walk from the road, and enjoy one of the Costa Brava's most photographed corners without treating the whole Begur shore as a single naturist strip. Sa Tuna and Aiguablava remain the classic family and snorkel coves of the massif.
