Cadaqués is the white fishing town on the Cap de Creus peninsula, the northernmost wild corner of the Costa Brava. Official Costa Brava guides call the peninsula a maritime and terrestrial natural park of wind-cut rock, and they still tell the story of artists, Picasso, Dalí and many others, who used the isolation and the light as a workplace. Dalí's house-museum is in the next cove, Portlligat. The parish church of Santa Maria holds a notable Baroque altarpiece. The lighthouse at Cap de Creus, on the site of an older watchtower, is where local people gather at dawn on 1 January. For centuries the town was hard to reach except by sea. Today a winding road from Roses is the usual approach; there is no railway. Park outside the old town when it is full, and walk.

The Tramuntana wind can close paths and whip the bay, and the landscape is protected, so stay on marked tracks. The village beach in front of Cadaqués is a social harbour strand. There is 1 nudist beach in Cadaqués, S'Alqueria Gran, a walk-in cove on the park shore where visitors can spend quiet days among the rocks and clear water. Wear proper shoes, carry water, and leave no trace. The cape rewards a slower visit than a simple swim stop: the white streets, the museum at Portlligat and the lighthouse road are as much a part of the day as the cala.
