Palamós is the leading fishing port of the Costa Brava, set on a wide Baix Empordà bay. Official Visit Palamós and Costa Brava guides put the old quarter on a headland between the fishing harbour and the marina, with the lighthouse at Punta del Molí, the fish auction at La Llotja, and the Fishing Museum, the only one of its kind in Catalonia. The town still lives by the fleet: red prawns, the July procession for the Mare de Déu del Carme, and evening terraces when the boats come in. La Fosca, S'Alguer and Cala de Castell are the named coves in the official narrative; Castell remains the wilder, less built-up corner. The C-31 and the GI-653 from Begur are the road approaches. There is no railway. Palamós is a proper town, market, schools and shipyards in memory, as well as a summer destination.
Inland, the Gavarres rise behind the cork-country villages. The harbour and La Fosca fronts are textile holiday sand, busy with families in July and August. There are 3 nudist beaches in Palamós, Cala Bona, Cap de Planes and Platja de la Cadena, public calas on the same rocky edge where visitors can spend lazy days in the sun or go for an all over tan. Walk the camí de ronda from the town or from Castell, wear shoes on the stones, and keep the main bay as the social, seafood-and-promenade half of the visit.
