Roses occupies the northern horn of its great bay, opposite the Montgrí, in the Alt Empordà. Official Costa Brava guides recall Greek Rhode and the 16th-century Ciutadella of Charles V, built against piracy, which still holds remains of the colony and the monastery of Santa Maria. The harbour is one of the busiest on this coast: fishing boats, a marina and a long urban sand. Santa Margarida, next door, is a later residential marina. Cap de Creus begins at the town's eastern edge. Official copy names the coves of L'Almadrava, Montjoi and Jòncols as the wilder, sports-and-walk shore; Montjoi was later famous as the site of Ferran Adrià's El Bulli restaurant. The C-260 from Figueres is the inland approach; the road around the cape toward Cadaqués is slower and fills in summer. Empuriabrava and the Aiguamolls lie across the bay.
Roses is a full-service resort as well as a historic port. The main bay beach in front of the town is textile and busy, a favourite with families looking for shops, bars and a long swim. There are 6 nudist beaches in Roses, Cala Calís, Cala Calitjàs, Cala Canadell, Cala del Lledó, Cala Montjoi and Cala Murtra, park-edge coves on the cape where visitors can spend quieter days among rock and clear water. Access is on foot or by the cape road. Stay on marked paths in the natural park, carry water, and treat the Ciutadella and the harbour front as the historic, family half of the visit.
