Sant Feliu de Guíxols is one of the larger Costa Brava towns, grown from a Benedictine monastery, a cork industry and a seafaring harbour. Official Costa Brava guides still send visitors to the Porta Ferrada in front of the monastery, the name of the summer music festival, the Museum of Maritime Rescue in the old lifeboat station, Modernista and Noucentista houses, and the chapel of Sant Elm on the headland. It was from that clifftop, in 1908, that Ferran Agulló is said to have given the coast its name. The town beach of Sant Pol, the harbour and the promenade are the urban front. Inland, the Pedralta rocking stone and the Cadiretes and Ardenya massif close the southern Baix Empordà. The C-31 and the GI-682 toward Tossa, a famous twenty-five kilometres of bends, are the road approaches. There is no railway.

Sant Feliu remains a year-round town, not only a July resort. The harbour and Sant Pol fronts are textile, family sand, busy with shops and evening terraces. There is 1 nudist beach in Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Cala del Vigatà, a smaller cove off the town sand where visitors can spend lazy days a little away from the promenade. Wear shoes on the rocks, and keep the monastery, Sant Elm and the cliff road toward Tossa as the cultural half of the visit if you want more than a single swim.
