Tossa de Mar, in the Selva comarca, is the Costa Brava town defined by its walled headland. Official Visit Tossa copy calls it a seafaring village and "blue paradise", and the municipal heritage page on the Vila Vella states that the walled precinct was declared a national historic-artistic monument in 1931 and is the only medieval fortified town still standing on the Catalan coast. Built from the early thirteenth century against piracy, it keeps crenellated walls, four large towers and three cylindrical ones, including the Torre d'en Joanàs over the bay. The Municipal Museum in the Batlle Palace records the painters who worked here, among them Marc Chagall. Official Costa Brava guides add the lighthouse interpretation centre and the winding GI-682 toward Sant Feliu, twenty-five kilometres of coves such as Salions, Futadera, Giverola and Pola. Coaches and the coastal road are the usual approach; there is no railway.
The main town beach sits under the walls; Cala des Codolar is the small cove on the other side of the point. Both are textile, family and camera-busy. There are 2 nudist beaches in Tossa de Mar, Cala de Sa Futadera and Cala Ull de Vidre, walk-in or pull-off calas on the cliff road toward Sant Feliu, a favourite with those who prefer a quieter swim than the bay under the walls. Wear shoes on the paths, take water, and keep the Vila Vella and the museum as the historic half of the visit.
