Santa Cruz de Tenerife Province
The province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife encompasses Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro. This site opens municipalities on the first three islands only. Tenerife is the largest Canary Island, a triangular mass of pine forest, banana coast and the Cañadas caldera, with Santa Cruz de Tenerife city as provincial capital and San Cristóbal de La Laguna as the UNESCO historic inland city. Official tourism presents Teide National Park as Spain's roof and a UNESCO World Heritage site, reached from the Orotava valley as well as from the south. Two airports split the island: Tenerife North beside La Laguna and Tenerife South in Granadilla de Abona, handy for the Costa Adeje resorts of Adeje and the Los Cristianos shore of Arona. The basilica town of Candelaria keeps the island's patron, the Virgin of Candelaria.
La Palma and La Gomera are greener, steeper western islands, both biosphere reserves, with Garajonay's laurel forest on La Gomera inscribed by UNESCO. Los Llanos de Aridane and Tazacorte hold the west banana coast of La Palma. San Sebastián de la Gomera is the Columbus port; Valle Gran Rey is the deep western valley that most visitors use as a beach base. Agriculture, fishing and tourism share the provincial economy. The north Tenerife cliffs around El Sauzal, La Orotava and Los Realejos are a different world from the south resort strip: more black sand, more walk-ins, fewer services. Apart from the province's main family beaches, there are also 14 areas that have 26 nudist beaches in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
