Las Palmas Province
The province of Las Palmas encompasses the three eastern Canary Islands, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, together with La Graciosa and the Chinijo islets that belong to Teguise. With so much of the province being coastal, it is an extremely popular winter and summer destination. Official tourism calls Gran Canaria a miniature continent of dunes, pines and ravines; Fuerteventura the beach island of the archipelago; and Lanzarote the different, volcanic island. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the provincial capital and a major port, with Gran Canaria Airport at Gando serving budget routes from all over Europe. Fuerteventura and Lanzarote have their own international airports. The lively city of Las Palmas and the resort strip of Arrecife are not hubs on this site, but the municipalities that do appear run from highland Artenara and the Maspalomas dunes in San Bartolomé de Tirajana to the Jandía wilds of Pájara and the north Lanzarote valleys of Haría.
Las Palmas province offers visitors an excellent choice of attractions, volcanic landscapes, dune parks and fishing villages. On Gran Canaria the south is the great golden shore of Maspalomas, Meloneras and Playa del Inglés, while the west and north keep darker sand, natural pools and long walks into Tamadaba. Official Gran Canaria tourism still uses the phrase eternal spring, and describes Güigüi as one of the island's wild postcard beaches. Fuerteventura stretches a trade-wind coast from the Corralejo sands in La Oliva to Cofete and Sotavento in Pájara. Puerto del Rosario is the island capital. Lanzarote adds Timanfaya, the Ajaches coves of Yaiza, Famara's cliff bay in Teguise, and the established naturist village of Charco del Palo on the Haría / Teguise border. Fishing, tomatoes, goats and tourism form the everyday economy. Apart from the province's main family beaches, there are also 15 areas that have 146 nudist beaches in Las Palmas.
